Daily Deviation Writeups

yellow[alien]probedThe nifty daily deviation writeups once again accompany the deviation they describe on the deviation details page. Yes, it took some time, but it has made its return!

Couple that with the nifty Daily Deviation browsing that was hooked up by +silvein a few days back and you have the perfect combination for browsing the daily art features here at deviantART![s]…

$2 wh0res and their free time

yellow[alien]probedThe past few days have been busier than a $2 wh0re on 3 for 1 night! Hopefully things slow down and I can get back to some coding because I have a task list that is quite filled at the moment.

Stay tuned for more information …

"About Us" Niftiness

yellow[alien]probedAfter a few days of wrangling the deviantART staff to get their biographies added to the system we are pleased to launch the new, updated and highly stylish about us page.

You might need to shift-reload/force reload if it shows up wacky because we updated the site CSS in order to accomodate the stylistic look seen on this nifty new about us page.

There are still some staff members who are delinquent in getting their biographies written but that is due to real life(tm) taking over possession of their online time and not allowing them to take the time to get a biography written. In due time these delinquent biographies will get updated. In the meantime all I can do is offer my apologies.

So, go check out who we are and enjoy some of the novels that were written there!

…and do not forget to give props to + pachunka for the wicked cssifying that he did on the page![s]…

Orkut will trump friendster

yellow[alien]probedAfter hearing about orkut.com this morning I decided to check it out. According to the news article I read, and what I could discern from the website itself, it seemed to be just like friendster.com. There was one problem though: everywhere you can do there are links and “advertisements” to sign up but when you try to sign up it tells you that you have to be invited.

So I gave up and just read a few more articles about it and then gave up some more. That is, until I received an invite email from Chris Pirillo or Lockergnome fame. I promptly signed up.

The interface and idea is strikingly similar to friendster but seems to be a little cleaner. The site is definitely magnitudes faster and overall seems more friendly, as ironic as that probably sounds. I spent some time adding friends, which ends up sending out invites if they are not already on orkut.

Because of the nature of how it works I actually wanted to spend time inviting people. It really is weird how that works in comparison to friendsters idea of “anyone can sign up” mantra. Spent some other time browsing the various communities and joined a couple and even started a deviantART community.

So now the short story behind orkut: google approached friendster a couple months back about purchasing it because they wanted to get in to social networking. Apparently thinking that they had some kind of status the folks at friendster turned down google. Google then decided to create their own version of friendster and ended up with orkut.com, named after the guy that wrote it.

The funny thing about this is that according to Alexa friendster is listed as 214 for today. Orkut, which just launched this same day, is at 505 for the day. If you look at google you do not see any ads for orkut anywhere. Even searching does not bring up much unless you search the news. What does that tell you about the power of google? This is why I say, in the title of the entry, that orkut will usurp friendster.

If you have joined orkut then let me know. If you have not and are interested then leave me your full real name and email address and I just might invite ya. For those who are interested you can view my profile right here.[s]…

Endoscopies & Other Assorted Fun

yellow[alien]probedWhat’s New?

I decided to remove all that excess stylization from my journal. Was getting too messy and did not really produce the effect that I desired. On top of that it screws with the way my journal looks at yellow[alien]probed which I did not think about when initially testing things out.

For the time being I plan to keep things simple on my journal. That is, until all the planned subscriber-only journal features are completely implemented. Pat +pachunka on the back cause I am awaiting some nifty CSSiness before I can continue development in this area.

Issues at Home

While I have been able to get some development completed in the last couple days the majority of my time has been spent with my wife at a local hospital. She has been having some trouble eating for the past couple weeks and has been too stubborn to go to see a doctor on her own so I dragged her to a fairly large University hospital rather than the rinky-dink one she was wasting her time at previously.

This doctor that she was seeing would just listen to her explain her issues and then dismiss it off as stress and give her a prescription for some bullshit medication. Never once had this doctor so much as touch my wife to see if she did not have a problem with her stomach nor did she ever order any tests.

Needless to say I was pissed because not only was this doctor wasting my wife’s time and my money but it was causing undue stress on me while I listened to her complain constantly. I decided that it was time to take her to a real hospital and see a real doctor and that is what we did yesterday (Thursday in Japan).

The very first day that she saw the doctor he ordered up a platter of tests. She got blood drawn, had her heart checked and had some x-rays of her chest taken. Then, worst of all, she got the same treatment that I received a while back: an endoscopy. She underwent that wonderful exam today (Friday) and even though it is just about the absolute worst possible exam ever created she came out of it unscathed. Because many of the blood tests take time to receive results on she has to go back and see the doctor next Thursday to find out what his diagnosis is.

Development Work

Other than this extreme excitement at home I did manage to get a little coding completed. I worked on a staff biography administration routine that will allow us to update the extremely outdated about us page. Other than that I have been spending time working on some other staff-only related projects with my sidekick $venox.

Props

Everyone stop by my buddy +dinyctis’s page and give him a swift pat on the back for the wicked work that he does on the News Team. Diny is always on top of the news queue and pumps out news as fast as $spot pumps himself.

Fun

Check out fontifier for a nifty way to get you some personalized fonts for free! It is a very nifty way to get a TrueType Font file of your handwriting.

yellow[alien]probed Whats New?

Did not do too much today other than work out some administrative development issues. Myself and $venox have undertaken a pretty huge project and are building it in small steps right now. Overall a pretty lame development day.

If I could only get $spyed to send me the specifications for this one thing then that would be great. But, alas, he is too busy catching up on all that email he missed out on while he was skating in Greece!

Development Log

The following is a list of what developement has been completed by myself, $dygel and $venox recently. No complaints about not being informed because here is your chance to stay informed.

Admin: Completed work on the staff contact list. Much of the code was already written by $chris but I finished it and got it in to a completely workable state.

Admin: Completed work on a small portion of this large administration project.
